Noosa session: good stuff and bad news

Finally some serious swell, even too much!
All the coast was basically trashed and so I went back to sheltered Noosa to get some fun waves.
There was a tremendous current, not met before to this extent, and I paddled for almost 3 hours just to keep position. I was destroyed at the end!

I will remember this session for 1 wave that curled up above me and gave me the thrill of riding a tubing wave. I'm not saying that I was inside a tube, just on the doorstep, but still going super fast and having a hell of a time!

I've been in the same position in the past, but I was never able to go past that moment. I always had not enough speed and I tend to surf up right, which is not good for that.
But this time I put the pieces together and I'm still stocked!

Bad note: the day before a bodyboarder died nearby, somehow, after entering from the rocks. It seems he was pushed back against the rocks. I'm sure it was just bad luck. Such a shame. It' so sad.

The point at Tea Tree, Noosa, where tragedy struck

Chissa'. Una cosa terribile.

Americans.. or Americans! or Self-doubt

I don't know what to think of it.

This guy created -and is now selling- a foam board for paddling in a swimming pool.
He says tha paddling in this way is better than just swimming and that your wave count will increase.

Now, I believe that paddling that way is effective, even though I'm not able to quantify it and provide meaningful measures against swimming.
And here's the thing: I've been doing the same thing since 2015, when I had to recover from surgery. I spent $20 on a bodydoard and asked permission at my local swimming pool.
Here's a video I took.

Also, at this link on fb, you can see people in Milan using finless shortboards in the same way. They have been doing it for some time as well.

Now what puzzles me is: it never occurred to me (and I bet to those guys in Milan) that I could make something that already exist and try to sell it to make money.
(Actually, $400 sounds like too much to really get a big market, but that's beside the point).
And I get a weird self-judgment feeling from this fact.
Am I stupid?
Did I miss on a chance to make money (at least, potentially) and/or create a small business?
Or it's just that Americans can't stop thinking about money?
(This is a big generalisation/stereotyping/judgmental sentence, I know).

Is the truth in the middle?

My own surfinshape board: 20$

The perfect wave?

'The search for the perfect wave' is part of the surfing storytelling, that mythology that surfers keep telling to each other even though you can't really find much of it in the water.
I got bored of it pretty soon. The 'search for the perfect wave' doesn't mean much to me, along with a lot of other stuff.
And I've just found an article that makes me think I may not be wrong, after all.

It's fascinating how modernity creates strong contradictions for those poor souls in search of the perfect wave!
Let's start from the Kelly Slater's wave.
Mechanically it is perfect. And when surfers talk about perfect waves they mean exactly that: mechanically flawless. And that's exactly the reason why the world went wow! when people first saw that man-made wave.
Nevertheless, lots of people (should we say haters?) keep throwing shit at it and at wave pools in general, arguing about the loss of the true surfing experience, and citing elements of surf mythology that, according to them, are irreplaceable. Things such as the contact with Mother Nature, the fight with the elements, the unpredictability of the ocean and so on.

But surprisingly (or maybe not, in  fact), the other day I read this article by Nick Carroll, in which he says that during the last day of competition at the Surf Ranch, some athletes requested an extra left because one of theirs wasn't exactly the same as the others. It wasn't fair competition!
This fact makes me smile.

So, on one side you have people, unknown surfers, who teaches you what surfing should be according to an old and questionable mythology, and on the other side you get the pros that destroy the same mythology not only competing in a pool, but complaining for a wave that is not 100% the same as the others!

It is clear then that the beloved unpredictability of the Ocean is just bullshit. Something you have to put up with only because you don't have other options. But if you do have other options..
Words VS reality.

So, yea, in the same way the 'search for the perfect wave' sounds to me just like another empty myth.
(Once upon a time a few lucky ones did go searching for waves, but 99.9% of today surfers are not going searching for anything, ever.)
And anyway, the hilarious thing is that if you are really searching for it, your search is over. The perfect wave is there in Texas, and soon in many other pools/locations. In a few more years all of us will get a taste of a perfect wave (like those guys).
But I understand it's an hard fact to accept.

My search for the perfect wave: the travel agency gave me destinations to chose from, and the giude took me to the best spot of the day. What a search!

Teaching

I've spent a sessions with two beginners.
They are nice guys, 5 and 10 years younger than me and they needed some guidance to get the ball rolling.

I told them to buy a cheap, second hand longboard.
I told them when and where to go, or meet, and I waited patiently while they got ready.
I told them where to lay down on the board and how the small waves were acting, and about rules, localism and things to consider.
I told them when to go or when to save energy.
I told them about nose-diving and losing the wave due to lack of forward movement -or weight distribution- on the deck.
I told them about the wind and the tide, pointing out things.
I told them about general surfing condition in the area. About the coast-line and about good website for forecasts and webcams.
I told them a lot of things.
I could have just said "paddle harder!" and stop. It would have been ok as well.
But I'm a person who likes to understand and likes to explain things.

Then, just 10 minutes ago I was going over old pages of this blog and found things that I've forgotten; like understanding where to put my feet for carving, or my arms, or things like that. Things that nobody told me. Things over which I spent hours watching youtube videos to understand what people were doing. Things over which I spent hours in bed, thinking, visualising, dreaming..

I can't help but to think of how I missed someone who could really tell me stuff about places, wind, surfboard, the ocean, surf stories and general surf wisdom. And I still miss guidance.

I've been a good person with these 2 beginners. We had fun.
But I can't help being jealous of them as well.
It appeared like I'm an expert. But I'm the one who want a teacher!

Me on a winter day. I love that moment.

A video -or- again on wave-pools

This is basically advertising without getting paid, so keep it in mind when you watch the video below.
But the reason why I'm posting it here is because it shows everyday, middle-age surfers tackling KS's wave pool.
And it's fantastic.

It's fantastic to not see pros doing the usual martian moves.
It's fantastic to finally be able to compare yourself, to be able to put yourself in there and say I can do that, I'd be better than that, I could learn that and so on.
Also, they say that they could use the artificial wave to try something over and over and improve immediately. Now, that's obvious, right?
And yet, social media and websites are still full of haters and stupid comments against wave-pools.
I watch this and really, I don't see any reason why it could be bad for surfing.

I'm counting the days till the one in Melbourne opens. Never soon enough.

Per me e' pura stupidita'.

Mai troppo in fretta.

Hawaii #2 - Waikiki

Waikiki beach is where modern surfing was born.
Once you see it, you undertand why.
It's a bay facing south-east and it has a seemingly flat reef at the bottom, for hundreds of meters. It feels like a big swimming pool. The waves just roll and roll and roll and the water is warm! It's a fantastic playground.

It could be a bit disorienting because there's no a clear 'direction'. There are many breaks and waves can come from different angles.

When I paddled out I was excited and totally unsure of what I was going to do. I aimed at a break rougly a 100 meters out from the artificial rock pools and stuck to that plan.

It was a day of chest-to-head high waves and they bounced back on the rock walls near the beach and created a messy surface where a lot of beginners where fighting the elements.
But at the break it was mostly glassy, with a bit of offshore wind.

My heart accelerated when I suddenly saw the iconic Diamond Head coming out from the back of the high-rises and dominating the scenery. It was late afternoon and the sun on the other side of the bay was painting everything with that special sideways light that I love.

I sat on on side and watched what the other 10 surfers were doing. Some teenagers were catching the waves some meters down the path. They didn't get the biggest but were collecting a lot of the others. Middle age men and women were surfing the A frame in both directions, even if the right side seemed better. There were some drop ins but everyone appeared relaxed. Nobody seemed to be way better than me. The only drawback seemed to be my rental surfboard: an old and consumed 9ft McTavish that I've never used before.

I waited patiently my occasion and got a small left. The board felt surprisingly wobbling and the wave died pretty soon.
I was disappointed by the board but Waikiki that day seemed to be comfortably within my reach.
I worked my way around the other side to surf right. After two more waves I got used to the reactions of the board and started to enjoy it.

I managed some good and long rides and I realised that the waves were easier than what I'm used to. For some reason, even the tallest one don't give you a fast and steep wall to race, but a gentle slope. It felt different even to the perfect 'made for longboard - Noosa waves' that I love.
I could see those old footage again, of people surfing straight on massive wooden surfboard, and I could recognize that waves under my feet, and that feeling of joyful cruising.

I surfed a couple of times there.
I don't know how it is when it's big, but I felt in love with Waikiki and suddenly I could see why it is the birthplace of surfing. It just makes so much sense.
It's a great, beautiful place.

Unfortunately the town and the high-rises kill the feeling. But if you sit for a moment on your board, and take the natural scenery in, you can still feel the magic and see the Duke and the other locals having a hell of a time in a fantastic, special place.
And you should THANK THEM.
I certainly did.

I will keep those memories close to my heart.

Even when big it seems it gives you a ramp, not a steep wall - Questa foto random sembra dimostri che anche quando grande Waikiki ti porge una rampa invece di un muretto.
From the surfcam

E ringraziarli.

Hawaii #1

I’m back from Hawaii.
It wasn’t strictly a surf trip but I managed to do few things that I wanted to do for quite some time: surfing at Waikiki, salute the Duke statue, visit the north shore.

It was a good experience, as every trip is.

I’ll provide some details soon. Meanwhile I leave you with my personal pic of the Duke, the father of modern surfing.

Thank you Duke!

Pear shaped

Pear shaped, Australians say.
Things going wrong.
I had plenty of things going wrong lately.
Also, around here the Ocean has been flat for 3 weeks.

Just keep swimming..

Meanwhile in Bali

The south sea has created some powerful storms recently.

Australia got a series of cold fronts and cold winds all across the south part and up to here in Queensland.
Then gargantuan waves arrived on the west coast (mostly underpopulated) with few images available on social media.
Now those same waves arrived in Bali.

This is Uluwatu in what is considered to be his biggest size in decades.
I'd love to hear some first hand accounts of this event!

The last guy is really surfing it, not just running for his life!

Spettacolare. Terrificante. Affascinante.

No leash, not a good idea

It seems that The Pass, in Byron Bay, is badly affected not only by the crowd, but also by those who surfs without leash.

The article in the link says that the number of incidents is raising and that locals are asking for legal consequences for those who loses their boards.
I agree.

Firstly because most of those longboarders are just acting as if they were in the 60s and they accurately dress up to give a very specific image of themselves: something like eremites looking for karma. Everything in them, sons of social media, is fake to my eyes.

Secondly because their senseless egocentrism can badly hurt the others. It is not acceptable. And after all, if you are looking for karma and the perfect wave, you shouldn’t be in the most crowded spot of the coast. Australia gives you plenty of empty, beautiful alternatives.

The girl cited in the article got some broken ribs and a punctured lung! This is just not acceptable.
This implies medical expanses, x rays, weeks of pain and possibly loss of income.
There’s no justification.

this pic belong to its owner

Gender disparity

The picture here is about the Billabong Pro Junior series in Ballito, South Africa.
As you can see from the numbers, the girl won half of her male colleague.
Honestly, it's disgusting.

And a lot of people on social media thought the same, flooding the organisers with messages of protests and hate.

The guys of the contest explained that gender discrimination had nothing to do with the money prize, and that it was calculated solely based on the number of inscriptions/participants in the male and female contest. With males outnumbering the female competitors.

While the explanation makes sense, I still wonder why there's such a distinction.
I agree on the fact that they should have 2 separate contests in order to give the female participants the same chance to win (not because of abilities, because of numbers and probabilities).
But why splitting the money prize of 1 category (Pro Junior) in 2 uneven fields?
Why making things so that you have a class A winner and a class B winner?

I'm not checking on google, but I bet it's all the same across all sports and all categories around the world.
Well, that doesn't make the issue less relevant.

That picture is disgusting.
It's about time to make things differently.

Crying at the office

When you check the surfcam and get stabbed!  :o
I didn't even press play.. I was already crying..

Winter

I love Queensland winter.
I love surfing.

how can you not want to be there?

I love the Gold Coast.
I love Australia.

Billabong Poncho - Review!

It's time for another review.

This time we talk about the Billabong poncho in the pictures.

You may think of getting one for those winter days, right?
To get back to the car and dry up staying warm enveloped in your fancy poncho. Also you can take off your stuff from underneath it and get changed.
Or at least this is what you could think..
Wrong!

This is probably the most stupid "surf gadget" you could ever get.
Everything here is wrong.
I don't even know how the fuck you can get it so wrong. Probably by not being a surfer and not wearing it, never?

First, when you put it on your head do not fit into the hole!
Imagine if you were surfing in a very cold place! You'd have to tear your frozen hears to put it on.

Second, this poncho has no sleeves!
Ok, technically ponchos have no sleeves, but they cover you completely. Clint Eastwood had to move away his poncho to fire his gun.

So, why this thing has 2 massive holes instead? The holes for your harms are soo big that you still freeze while wearing it.
Why? Who decided the measures for this product? Who is the genius? What the hell?
This thing does not protect you from wind and being cold. Fail.

But you can still get changed easily with it, right? Wrong.
The poncho is so short that you actually expose you balls in the carpark as soon as you lift your leg!

So, let's wrap up this review, shall we?

Vote: 1 star out of 5
Does it work?
Not at all.
Do I like it?
Not at all.
Would I recommend this thing?
Never.
Any suggestion?
Save your money.

Eccome no..

In ogni manica ci stanno 3 braccia.

Funziona?
No.
Mi piace?
No.
Lo raccomanderesti ad altri?
Neanche per sbaglio.
Consigli?
Risparmiate soldi.

Wavepool near Brisbane

It seems Brisbane and the Gold Coast will have a wavefpool as well.
Unfortunately things are going very slow for this project.
C'mon, everybody, we don't have hundreds of years!

All the details here:
Webber wavepool

Dettagli qua.

Having fun at the beach break

I never consider surfing at the beach breaks.
But when it's the only option..

Flat is never really flat :)

Wave pools? Yes, at one condition..

I'm in favour of wave pools.

I don't get those who keep saying it's rubbish. I think most of those comments are just haters having fun, and the rest is people who argue about connection with the ocean and other fairy tales. They are the same surfers who won't ditch wax for alternative solutions because "waxing is part of surfing" (?), and so fuck the ocean.
Perfect reasoning.

One one side, I think that wave pools are a natural progression of the sport. It's just logic. And on the other hand, there's an element which for me is fundamental in the debate: wave pools introduce an environment where everybody is equal.
The great, real, fantastic, underestimate characteristic of surfing in a pool is that there's a virtual waiting line that surfers have to respect.
Everyone in the line has the same right to surf a great, perfect wave on his/her own term.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
It's the end of the rule of the jungle that manages the line-ups around the world, and the beginning of equality.
No bullies or dickheads could prevent any humble, Sunday surfer from surfing the best wave available. And have fun in safety.

Sometimes I wonder if this is the real reason why many surfers seem to be against wave pools: equality! Same waves, same number of waves, same waiting periods for all.

Now, the tragic thing is I just found out a new wave pool technology (by American Wave Machines) that makes all the usual marketing promises, with a very distinctive characteristic:
'PerfectSwell® runs with no lines, wave count limits, or rules other than traditional surf etiquette'.

I can't believe my eyes! Are this guys for real?
So, they will let overcrowd the pool and let the surfers to work it out for themselves!?
Do they really want someone to pay a ticket to watch the bullies surf?
No wave counts limits means exactly that if you fight your way through, you can catch whatever wave you want.

I'm speechless.
I think they are missing the exact reason why everyday surfers would pay for it: waves guaranteed for everyone.
Honestly, I can't believe this model would work.
Wave Pools are not a reality yet, and  surf-rage is already part of the game?
Seriously?

So, I'm in favour of wave pools, at one condition:
no bloody line-ups in them.

Senza bulli, idioti e locals a fare proclami.

A queste condizioni allora dico no anche io.

Al line-up autogestito in piscina dico no. Neanche per sogno.
Non ha senso.

2 faces

The purchase of the noserider meant 'change' for my surfing.

I didn't know what to expect and how long it would have take me to learn to noseride.
But I felt ready, and in fact walking on the deck and nose ride has been a nice and fairly simple task. Don't get me wrong. I may look like a crab and my nose rides are nothing memorable. But I' doing it.

The point is the new board rides so differently from my progressive longboard.
It is like asking me, bagging me for a bottom turn, trim, and straight to the nose. All the time.

This is opening new realm of awareness, I would say.
My feet feel the board and I adjust to it. One board wants to go up and down, wants speed. The other wants to glide forever.
I'm kind of re-learning my approach to waves. But it's not always automatic to switch. One problem I created is that sometimes I go for a bottom turn when using the progressive board on a steep wall. And I fuck up the wave because it takes so long to go down and turn that the wall is already closing on me. While in the past, on a steep wall, I always kept the board up high for the first second or two.

On the opposite, last Saturday I managed to push the noserider up and down the face a few times. The board felt very stiff, but I kind of forced it into it.

I'm happy because, in the realm of the recreational surfers, I feel I'm at a decent point. And now my brain is working on this new differentiation that adds "things" to my surfing. I already feel a bit more complete.

Surfing is good. :)

Never Say Never

I came across this nice book by Nat Young titled Surfing Fundamental.
As I was flipping the pages I ended up on one about surfing pools.

No matter the topic, but when I hear ‘it will never happen’ I shake my head. Not because I know best, but because ‘never’ is such a definitive word that it doesn’t really apply to many things. Especially if it’s about humans and humans related ‘things’.

These days I hear a lot of ‘never’ associated with electric cars, for examples. Wherever you read comments, there are too many ‘difficulties’ for the common man to be able to accept the idea that electric cars are really coming.
I don’t know why. Or better, I know it (instinctive fear and refusal of changes), but I will never really understand it.

So, here we are. Nat Young sharing his wisdom on surfing and saying that surfing pools will never deliver. Just because 20 years ago nobody had the technology, the money and the interest in making it work. Funny enough, Nat young is being proven wrong by his own -and most celebrated professional surfer- colleague.

Just don’t say ‘never’ man!

Never Say Never Nat!

A lot of waves (that I don't surf)

2018 has been very good so far, in terms of delivering waves.

Cyclones and other weather combinations have send constant waves for weeks and weeks.
But life gets in the way and I'm missing out on a lot of occasions.

Ice on the cake: the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast are only making things even more complicated.   :(

Noosa is pumping today. And I'm stuck here.
Saturday will be mayhem.. but Saturday is the only change I got.

Sad.

Noosa at noon today. Until 10am it was empty!
How it will look like this Saturday??

Noosa, a nord, oggi pompa. Incredivile. E io guardo dal computer.  :(

Tristezza.
