About Surfing

About surfing, or, what I think about it.

I feel the need to write this down, to spell it out.
So, here we go.

For me surfing is not a philosophy.
Every time someone mentions the word philosophy nearby the word surfing, I never find an explanation of said philosophy. It’s just a good story to tell, it seems. Well, I discard that.

For me surfing is not a lifestyle.
Just because I go surfing in the weekend I don’t think I have a distinctive lifestyle that puts me apart from those who likes to play footy or skying in the spare time. That’s not enough.
Talking about lifestyle seems to be a way to be cool at all costs.
What if I like play chess every evening? Do I get a chess lifestyle?
This is something that applies to some, but not to the majority of recreational surfers.

Surfing doesn’t take me closer to mother-nature than a walk in the bush.
You can pay attention or you can just walk by. As a matter of fact, I pollute the planet for my enjoyment among waves. Like every surfer, in fact.

Surfing doesn’t make me wise and I’m not becoming a Zen master.
I spend my time checking the waves and the others. If it gets flat I desperately wait for more. If it gets bigger I try to not hurt myself. Sometimes I have fun with friends, sometimes I’m all alone. But whatever the session is, I’ve never found karma or enlightenment, in me or in the others around me.
Quite the opposite, surfing brings out my selfish worst, creating tension with my partner and problems with my social life. Beside, I met some really shit people in the water.

Surfing doesn’t make anyone cool.
Millions of people surf, and having a surfboard is like having a bicycle. If you surf, you are just  like everyone else.

I recognise that some exceptional people have a connection with the ocean that goes beyond what we normally experience. They are few and they are special, like sport champions. We can admire them and possibly learn from them. They do have a different lifestyle and a different and deeper understanding of the act of surfing and the ocean. But they are exceptions from the majority of surfers.

Surfing is addictive to many people. Yes.
I explain this with 3 factors:

1-Being in the Ocean is beautiful.
Everyone loves it and going to the beach has been a beloved activity since spare time has been available.

2-Surfing is a fun activity.
It lets you have fun in a fantastic, beautiful setting.

3-The fun is limited.
Way more limited than any other activity that I can think of. The scarcity of satisfaction keeps you wanting more and never satisfied.

So, for me, and I believe for a lot of people, I surf because I have fun. Just that.
I don’t dress differently, I don’t live differently, I don’t think differently. I just go to the beach and have fun whenever I can.
And I’ve never met philosophers or Zen master in the water.

Surf is fun
