Bennett is a classic bear

So, here we go with a pastime, if you need one:

Why on earth Bennett Surf Co., Bear Surfboard and Classic Malibu have the same logo?

Yes, not exactly the same.. whatever.. but what’s the story here?
Can anyone tell?

According to the unreliable internet sources, Bennett was founded in 1956, Bear in 1980 and Classic Malibu in 1987. But does this timeline has anything to do with their logos?

Bennett is Australian. Bear was created in California for the Big Wednesday movie. Did they see Bennett’s logo?? And did Peter White got inspiration from the cult movie for his own logo? Or was he a friend of Bennett?
Or are they completely unrelated stories?

I would happily read a 300 pages book on this matter. On a sunny afternoon, with a drink at hand, and the Ocean on the background.

-------

Another Fed

In this merciless spring I can only browse the web in search of solace.
So I now add another blog to my list. It belongs to an Italian guy, from my same windy island, with my same name, who also surfs and writes. Only, he has a gift in writing. (surfing I don't know!)
I'm sorry because it's in Italian only.
I may translate some of his posts sometime, but guys, you have to learn another language! :)

:) ah ah

On SwellNet today there's this pic as "front cover":

This is Rachlan Rombouts surfing in NSW, Australia.
Some would say: "today you'd need a shortboard..."

I love it.

Fantastica.

Carveboard Review

It’s a busy time in my life with a lot of things going on. And with a never ending season of horrible surfing conditions!
So it’s time to write a new review: the Carveboard review!

As you may know from this post I already had the Surfstick.
It’s a good training skate and a lot of fun, but it has two major drawbacks. The first one –irrelevant to me- is that it’s not a common skate and therefore not good as a mean of transport or anything different than carving. The second one, more to the point, is that allowing you super carving power, with more leaning and tighter turns than usual skates, it needs near perfect tarmac to perform. Or else you are on the ground.
That’s why at the end I got the big brother, with tires for wheels.

The Carveboard is big and heavy. You have to check the tires pressure and adjust them to your ability and the slope you have at hand. Thinking of going around with it it’s just out of question.
Apparently they are not making this model anymore. I believe that the limitations I listed have been the major factor in its lack of success among skaters. And that’s the point. This is a product made to train surfers. But it is officially a skateboard, and it seems there’s no market for it in the skateboard world!

And it’s a shame, because it’s really, really fun!
I love it.

An easy slope

The tires don’t care if the road is dirty, or if there’s some crack on your path. You just go down the slope and carve, carve and carve and have fun until the bottom.
A part from the grip, I think this big training object suits me more than the little brother. It’s at least one meter long and heavy and kind of slow to turn. It fits my longboard needs properly.
(For shortboarders is probably better the Surfstick)
You only need to restrain yourself from steering with your front foot, as it will translate in a big mistake on the water!

I think this is a great tool and a lot of fun. And it couldn’t be different if Barton Lynch (1988 world champ) uses it in surfs camps*!

Thumbs up!

*They use the Australian made Streetboardz, identical to the American Carveboard.

Even when not pushing, you reach interesting angles - Interessanti inclinazioni anche in discese leggere
Original Carveboard and Surfstick

------

E’ addictive.

*Ufficialmente usano lo StreetBoardz, prodotto in Australia, assolutamente identico.

Are cyclones coming this way?

This article on SwellNet says we can aspect more cyclones this summer.
But it seems it doesn't mean waves all the time.

"Dr Andrew Watkins is the Climate Prediction Services Manager at the Bureau of Meteorology and he said Australians should expect an average to above-average tropical cyclone season, due to neutral to weak La NiƱa conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean."

So.. good news, or what?
mumble.. mumble..

At the pool

This is what I've been doing for the last 18 months.
2Km, twice a week. That's 40 laps a session, with a pop up at the end of everyone.
I'm 40 now and if I want to enjoy my weekend surf session, I can't just turn up and paddle out.
I also do other stuff, but this is the most important.

Progress

Another poor conditions day, another great day!

Since only few and not so good surfers were out, my pal and I were able to surf a number of small and super fun waves. And we had the chance to try out stuff.

So this is the official pic of my cross stepping to the nose! I did my first actual nose riding, plus had a lot of fun!

Sorry, I took a pic of my laptop screen!

Sorriso a 100 denti.

On surfing rules

The rules of surfing.

Those amazing rules, made for our own safety and wellness.
Oh yes. Sure.

Think about every time you surf a crowded spot: if there was a policeman directing the traffic, and making sure everyone complied to the rules, probably only 5 guys would have being able to surf.
Because there’s always someone better than you, popping up far into your inside. Surfing harder and paddling even harder. If there was a policeman, nobody but the few very good surfers would ever catch a wave. Following the rules.

Those lovely rules.
Born when fins allowed surfers to go sideways on the wave face, and when the mass of young and fit adults jumped into the water to be cool like in Gidget. More people but also more space needed.
Interestingly, that was also the time when social rebellion was born. Surfers rejected social accepted behaviours and abandoned schools, families and friends to go in search of the perfect, uncrowded wave. They didn’t want to live by others rules.

It is almost like the surfing rules were made by people who didn’t want social rules.
So, if this is the context, what else can you come up with but the jungle law?

If you are paddling out, get out of the way.
(Even when someone is in trouble in the white water, they are asked to disappear, so that the surfer doesn’t have to make an unwanted turn!)

If you are not the closer to the pick, get out of the way.
If you are not the first on the wave, get out of the way.

I like how this two can be twisted at surfers discretion:
If you are closer to the pick, but paddled second, get out.
If you paddled first, but far from the pick, get out.

Basically a proficient surfer does what the fuck he wants.
The jungle law.
And if the jungle law is broken, verbal and physical assaults are expected.
Thumbs up!

Think about it.
What if you are in a restaurant and in comes a chef that asks you to vacate the table for him, arguing that you are so dumb you can’t distinguish a bad from a good wine?
What if someone with a Mercedes jump the line at the traffic light saying: well, I go faster!
Would that be acceptable?

Well, it happens continuously in the water: I can catch a wave far on your inside, so get out. It’s your problem, not mine.

But what if we were to apply common rules to surfing? I mean, common rules!
What if there was a policeman keeping people in a line, with every one catching a wave in turns? (first in, first out)
I believe most of the surfers I see around me in the water every weekend would be fine with it. Because no matter the conditions, you will get as a good shot as every one else.
I believe only the proficient surfers would cry like babies at the idea of equal sharing.

I’m provoking here.
I’m pushing the discussion around to make a point:
Surfing rules are needed, yes.
But I don’t see them as unquestionable. And I don’t like people who don’t allow room for questioning things.
Surfing rules are needed. But far from being perfect. And being the crowd already a problem in many spots, and only to get worst everywhere, it’d be about time to start thinking different.

------

Le regole del surf.
Queste fantastiche regole che ci fanno vivere in sicurezza e armonia.
Certo.

I conti tornano.

Io parto piu’ all’interno, o prima. E tu devi farmi passare.

A good session

I just had a great session.

Conditions weren't amazing but the crowd factor was manageable and there was a good, relaxed wibe in the water.
I got planty of waves and had some really fun ones.
This was the first noticeable session in months. I was rusty but as the time passed I got more and more confortable with everything.

I'm happy.

(as always, i didn't stop a moment to take a single pic..)

-----

Felice.

Stuck in Limbo

Surf forecasts are horrible. I'm not sure if it's worth to go to the beach, yet again.
Meanwhile I'm trying to book a surftrip, but it's seem to be an extremely difficult task.
I'll explain later.
So.. I'm stuck, accomplishing nothing.
I can only post a photo then.
Here we go: Coolangatta sunset, after my first poor session in almost two months.

Coolangatta Sunset

Bloccato, senza combinare niente.

It's finally time to surf again

After almost two months of busy life and traveling, it's about time to get in the water again.

I am a few cm fatter than before and incredibly out of fitness.

There's a low system just south of here that is sending lot of wind but also reasonable waves up the coast. This weekend should be duable and actually I'm hoping for small size as I'm really not confindend in my ability to fight the white water..
At the same time: I can't wait!

-----

Surfing Sardinia

Visiting the good old Europe.
In the last five to ten years Sardinia has been recognised as probably the best place for surfing in the Mediterranean Sea.
It just happens that Sardinia is my born place!

So I went to the west coast to visit the Isbenas Surf Club. That day there was the last pulse of a teeny-tiny swell and the guys invited me to have a go with an old longboard.
They could surf those ripples with great agility and skills. For me it was just too small and short to be able to do something more than just pop up.
Below here, a picture with some kids learning the basics.
Believe me when I tell you that in the right day the waves are good. Obviously you have to find whre to go..
Now it seems the right day is coming, but I have a flight to catch soon.
But it's alright. The long points of SE QLD are calling me and I feel very luky to live in Brisbane.

Hats off for the Sardinian crew. They really work and wait hard for a good wave.

Respect!

The real surfer

What defines a surfer? Who can be called a surfer?
I find it an interesting question.

First, I don’t think pro surfers enter in the equation. They live extraordinary lives and cannot be used as comparison. They are out of this world and don’t even represent the surf community, with so many different people of all ages, riding all sort of stuff.

Second, a part from the first point, I don’t know the rest of the answer. But there’s something that I do know.

You see, I came across a simple sentence on a blog where a young guy was being called ‘a real surfer’ because he knew very well the home spots and conditions, and mostly because he spent all his spare time surfing.  Fuck no.
You can’t be saying that I’m not a real surfer because of that!
Rest assure that I give surfing 100% of the time I can give it. And a bit more! And sorry if I’m not 20 anymore. Sorry if I have a life to take care of. Sorry if I work and study at the same time. Sorry if I love to spend time with my wife. Sorry if I like to spend time with my few good friends. Sorry if I don’t live near the beach and I have to drive 2 hours just to see the water. Sorry if I have to carefully and painfully plan every session and fit it with all the rest like the best tetris player. All the commitment and sacrifices and compromises that I (and all my friends) do just to be there, is something that other ‘real surfers’ don’t even know what it means. Because they are not real surfers! They are exceptions, or slackers. Fuck that.

We are the norm. We keep the sport alive. We buy magazines, equipment and stuff. We are the ones ‘the industry’ is talking to. A real surfer is the old guy with the mal who says g’day, is the youngster who drops me all the times, is the girl in bikini walking on the deck, are my friends  sitting in the office in suit, checking out the forecast and texting ‘where about?’.
Real surfer, yes, with the biggest smile after the smallest stupid wave. Because for us, that smallest stupid wave means more than another tube for KS.
So I’m not sure what define a surfer, but I’m sure a lot of people (an awful lot of people) who would never make it into a magazine are real surfers. And we deserve respect.

That moment - Quel momento #2

That moment.

When the sun shines.
When the water is fantastic.
When the forecast said it was flat.
When everybody went somewhere else.
When eventually some funny sets arrive.
When life is beautiful.
And you can’t help but have a stupid smile on your face.
Stoked.

(that moment #1)

Empty Superbank, full smiley face!

Quel momento.

Outrage! The Samsung Galaxy Surfboard

Surfers around the world are outraged by the Samsung Surfboard.

To me it doesn’t seem a smart idea but I don’t have anything against it. I guess younger generations will use it in the future, if it really will be produced.

So, instead of wasting time crying about the death of surfing, I have these practical questions in my mind:
1 – How can you read the screen if you cover it in wax?

2 – If you can place a screen on a surfboard, can someone PLEASE place a non-slip thing so that we can say goodbye to wax?

3 – Given that you can’t see the wax, is there any chance that that surfboard already has an non-slip deck? If so, can we please skip the sms part and GET THAT DECK?

(oh, yes.. surfboards makers don't have the tecnology, the scientific knowledge and the will to change how boards are made. And surfers don't like anything different from 1950 techonolgy for their boards.)

Somewhere near a little tube

I dindt really test the new pad as the waves in coolangatta were kind of hollow and fast. Not too big but they often tended to tube a bit.
I’m not talking about tube riding here, just the lip going over and people crunching down to fit the head or shoulders inside it.
But that’s my black beast.
I’ve trouble going fast enough to get past those sections.

It was a beautiful day and for once the crowd was within the limit of doable (7am!)
We had fun but I only think of one particular wave, high, steep and fast. I saw it building up and went up the face as much as I could. But then the lip started coming over (on my hips) and I could see I was never going to get past that. I folded my body in a little ball and let the board go far from me.
It has been great because I pushed my limits for few seconds knowing that it could have ended in disaster, and it has been extremely disappointing because now I realize that crunching down half step forward I could have make it.
But when you get -one- wave like this a year, it’s hard to be ready and be able to conquer it.
It’s always the same issue. Crowd. I myself am crowd.
I don’t know what to do.

I wish I will soon get another shot at it.

 -----

Stavo serfando circa a meta’ tavola.

A me invece e’ venuto timore revereziale.

The Tikigrip

Talking about sticky stuff.

I just found this website, from US. These guys created grip strips to replace wax on surfboards. It’s called Tikigrip.
It seems I’m not the only one who thinks wax is obsolete and stupid (and polluting).

I like it. I like when people try to move forward.

I personally use the VersaTraction on my board. After one year I can say it works, even if I had to add a tiny tiny bit of wax on the tail to avoid some slippery effects at high inclinations. (maybe if I was able to turn tighter it wouldn’t happen, anyway). But overall I’m happy with it.

Main differences between VersaTraction and Tikigrip:

-VT costs around 90AUD for a longboard, TG 6USD a roll (a roll is 5ft)
-VT is transparent and even if with time it gets dark a bit, it is still mostly not visible. TG has a visual impact on your board (but it can be turned into cool design!)

I’d prefer the transparent solution, but I’d like to try the Tikigrip out!

For VersaTraction review(s), please check here.

New gadget

My never ending exploration of options..

Because sometimes I still make the stupid mistake of turning backhand too far forward, I thought to teach myself where to put my back feet. Hence the picture below.
I know that dull minds will object about having a traction pad on a longboard, but do you think I give a fuck?

I can’t wait to try it out.

OMG! A traction pad on a longboard!

Dreaming of..

I just post a picture here.
It's taken from a webcam, right now.
Many of you will know the place immediately.

Let's say for now that this place is calling me..

Fantastic sunset, fantastic ripples..

Un fotogramma appena preso da una webcam.
In molti potrebbero riconoscere immediatamente il posto.

Ne sento il richiamo.. magari, chissa'..

Health & surf

March has been a bad month and April is working hard to be worst.
When you’r sick, in bed or on the couch, with pain and all, the idea of surfing seems so far that it’s hard to believe to be able to drive 2 hours, run to the water, paddle for hours and catch waves.
Surfing becomes a dream and you are not sure it was true at all. At the same time, surfing keeps you wanting to get back there as soon as possible.

Last Saturday I’ve been back in the water. I had no energy and almost gave up fighting the white water.
Then I caught some waves and my soul felt much, much better.
I hope the ocean will let me have fun this autumn. I need it.

Coolangatta surfing - last Saturday afternoon

About crowd (and dumb people)

An article from Swellnet to not just complain but think about what to do.

I think the author have some suggestions that can be taken seriously.
Unfortunately, the comments are so dumb, as always.  So, so dumb.
There's one guy that says: 'wave-parks can be a solution', to which the first reply is:
Yeah and Krispy Kreme outlets Provide so much supply that fat people never eat elsewhere.

Surfers. It seems to me that the problems in the water are caused not by the crowd itself, but by the dumbness of the board riders..

_____

Where did March go?

I had high expectations for March since the last few years have been great. But this time it was not the case. The conditions have been worsening all the time, plus sometimes I have been busy, sometimes I was tired.
Now I’m hoping for some good days in April, and just keep my routine going.
Steady and easy. Easier said..

A picture - Una foto #6

After weeks of good and big waves here, in Hawaii or in Portugal, the ocean is taking a rest.

I always say that I don’t care much of big waves, and that the usual 3 or 4ft delivered by the points around here is perfect for my happiness.
On this, I found this pic from the Pacific Longboarder magazine on FB which make me high way more than others.
To be in the water alone, and seeing that little hill of liquid joy coming to you, and you alone, while everybody else didn’t consider giving the ocean a try, it’s a moment I experienced a few times, and it’s pure joy.

I love this pic. This is pure, real surfing to me.

 -----

Egoism

Like every addiction, surfing is making me a worse person.
My egoism is skyrocketing.

Winston's touch

Weeks of good waves and the core of cyclone Winston's waves is still to reach the Australian coast.
I'm not sure if I should be exhited or scared..

Magic moments

Last Saturday afternoon we were surfing at Tea Tree, Noosa.

It was a bit crowded and we didn't do much for a bit, but it was the only spot working.
When the afternoon became evening people started to retreat, until little by little we were only ten, then 5, then 3.
For once the waves were ours. The point all for us.
And then a little magic happened:
there was no wind, the ocean was like mercury, and the almost full moon lightened the sky and the waves to the east, while the last, red/orange/yellow rays of sun gave sight for our rides.
Black, blue and silver on one side, black, gold and red on the other, simultaneously. And silence.

I'm not able to describe it better than this. I whish I could.

It was magic. For a few minutes we were in a parallel universe, where magic was possible, and beauty was all.
At some point, at the end of a ride, I stretched up my legs and my back, lifting my arms and face to the sky, like Rocky Balboa on top of the stairs. Stars and Noosa lights far away.
And even so, the board kept going as smooth as ever. I didn't shout. I was pure joy.

I'll never forget it.

Surfing into 2 postcards at the same time

Ero gioia pura.

Non lo dimentichero' mai.

Surf and Zen

3 weeks of good to very good condition, with a chance to get epic.
Cyclone Winston makes damages on the pacific islands and gives great waves down here.

In my limited experience this is exceptional. According to old surfers account, this is the way it was once upon a time. But it’s rare now. And by Murphy’s law I’m really stuck with stuff to do.
Unfortunately I’m super busy, otherwise I’d be spending my year holidays one hour from here, surfing every day. But life has a greater scope than just waves, and there are millions of commitments to honour, for a million reasons. (that’s the life of the real surfer, as I use to say. A life of struggle and double flips).
I need to limit myself to weekends only, and even then, to carefully plan my next sessions.

Surfing is teaching me the Zen. How to keep calm and soothing my soul.

-----

15 February 2016

Numbers -or- it's easy mate!

Recently I was asked about how many hours I spent surfing.
So I made some calculation.

I’ve been surfing once a week for just over 4 years, 6 months of which wasted for an health problem. So I tend to correct this to 3.5 years.
With aproximation, I can say that I’ve been in the water for 250 hours.
Now I just read an article where it is said that average surfers have 1.5 to 3 sessions a week (fuck you guys). And also that a surfer paddles for 60% of the time in the water. And that surfing is only 15% of the active time (of the 60%).
So if I do 15% of 60% of 250hrs.. that’s 22.5hrs of surfing.
Honestly.. this seems a lot to me.

If I compare this to my recent skateboard and goofboard learning, it feels like I may have been practicing for.. maybe ten hours..
And this is why surfing it’s hard. 4 years of my life dedicate to this, for probably 10 hours of joy.

But at the same time, if you think about it, you actually just need few hours to grasp the basics and be able to enjoy it and do your little stuff.
So, that’s easy, right?

But it’s hard!
But it’s actually easy.

Or not?

-----
-----

No, aspetta: e’ difficile.

Ma facile. Pero’ e’ difficile!

Che ne dite voi?
