What a day!

Super happy!

Yesterday I managed to have a weekday surf after a long time and I couldn’t have chosen a better day. I went to Tea Tree in Noosa where 2/3 feet waves were rolling nicely in the bay, with the occasional odd 5ft set.
There were locals in a reasonable number and a relaxed vibe all the time.

I managed to get my share of nice rides and even a few of the biggish ones. Man! So stoked. I always say: if you let me get a nice wave I will ride it very decently!

God, I’m still thinking about two cut backs that I managed to do.. it was the first time I pushed my boundaries that much, leaning and all.. fantastic!
I even surfed left. I think I was the only one doing it. Near the end some waves were bigger to your left and kept going like that to the inside corner of the bay, over the rocks. I went there 4 or 5 times and nobody followed me.

I think surfing the right points backhand give me an advantage over the others at same level. It seems I have a better view of the wave and my cut back is a forehand turn, and kind of easier. So many times I surf both ways while I see many regulars trying to go right even when there’s nowhere to go. This makes me proud.

I’m so happy. I’m still learning and improving. Little by little. But that’s surfing right?

---

Sto ancora godendo!

Intanto ieri ho fatto qualche altro passo Avanti. Piano piano progredisco. Ancora, sempre.
Felicissimo.

A great picture

I follow a group on FB called Coolangatta Community of the 50's, 60's & 70's.
They post a lot of old pictures of Coolangatta, some very valuable I believe.

I think this one is worth to share here too.
It's Greenmounth and Kirra viewed from Snapper Rock, 1903!

I'm in love with it because there's no human signs and I think it looks like as it always had for thousands of years.
Can you imagine make your way through the bush to reach such a beautiful spot with perfect waves rolling in?
Or coming by boat with J.Cook and say: "Captain! perfect rights ahead! out the surfboards!"
I'm joking but I really think about how great it must have been to be there alone..
Look how wild it was!
I love Coolangatta.

---

Fantastico..
Amo Coolangatta.

On surfboards #5

Browsing an Australian magazine I found this article:

The issue of obsolete technology in surfboards comes up often.
The epoxy mass production of surfboard is a first solution* to out-of-date methods, but I believe surfboard should have better materials and more features, like anti slippery surface, studied and proved effective combination of fins, channels, flexy tails and so on.
But again, surfing lives in a sort of weird limbo.

*let's leave aside the environment and all sort of things for now
----

Surf Lakes in Brisbane?

I found this some weeks ago.

A crowdfunding project to create a surf park near Brisbane, QLD.

If that works as they  say I'll be very happy to spend some times in there.
Unfortunately it will never happen soon enough..

----

That moment - Quel momento

That moment.

When the wave is a bitch, straight up and vertical, on few inches of water.
When your longboard barely fit in it.
When you try hard and in a split second your board is already sideways and ready to go.
When that hot girl looks at you and (may) thinks: wow! is he actually making it?
When the guy down there is paddling and watching at you and thinks: wtf! is he actually making it?
When the sun shines.
When the wave is crystal clear.
When life is bautiful.

That moment when you are an istant away of being a hero. Or from disaster.

Quel momento.

Checking the webcam..

A classic Coolangatta 2ft winter day comes up on my screen..
Not much but the great colours are enough to make me wish I was there..

On Snowdonia broken

Many in the surf community are laughing at the Snowdonia park which broke down today or yesterday and will stay close for probably a few weeks.

God I hate who critics new things. By default.
And the more stupid are the comments the bigger gets my irritation.

At least give it some time. Whatever you are talking about, it's not possible to rule something out if you don't have enough evidence.

The Snowdonia Surf Park is temporary broken. Ok. It's unfortunate. But this fact doesn't mean anything.

Now read this comments taken from around the web:

Lets see 45 pounds=about 75 dollars and hour. A 3 hour session=about 220.00 dollars..Surf 5 times a week--Well--you do the math.......But don't worry boys--they will be glad to take your money....

And I think any real surfer will tell you--the "whole surf experience"--is way more than just riding a wave--its the freedom you feel when your feet leave the concrete and hit the sand--the real ocean --the feel of the salt water on your skin--the fresh off shore wind hitting your face--hanging at the beach with your friends-- watching the sunset over the ocean with your girl friend and friends--and all the other good vibes that go with it..The Wave Garden "Will Never" be able to reproduce these things--(Which may ultimately be its "un-doing"...while we--the blessed ones--get to play in God's wonderful creation--for free..........

As I said other times, to me, who I still consider myself new to the surf world, the surf community is a blind and conservative tribe.
Also, apparently surfers are only living in front of a surf break.
Well no, goddamit.

My friends and I pay every time we want to surf.
First, we need to plan the weekend, check the forecast and try to fit the surfing and the social commitments into 2 shorts days. And most of the time the best moment for surfing doesn't fit with the rest. Second, we pay to buy, have and keep the equipment in shape. Third, we pay for petrol, and tires, and car maintenance that for me means 250km per week, at least, only for surfing. Fourth, once at the beach I also need to eat and drink and pay the car park.
Fifth, once I paid my fees, I traveled, I committed to all, and I'm in the water with plenty of "free waves", I may spend most of my time waiting and doing nothing because it's too crowded.

So fuck you guys.
I can only possibly think of two things: you are stupid, or you are "against" by default.

Let's take the first quote: 75$ an hour for surfing? Considering that I spend 30$ to 40$ petrol, plus 30$ to 40$ food (I'm not alone), plus car maintenance for surfing 2 to 3 hours and catching maybe 10 waves, if it's a good day, and only if, well fuck yes, I'll give anybody 75$ for 10 good shaped waves all for me in a single hour!

And the "whole surf experience"? Yes, all poets here! I guess that guy is the one who lives in front of the surf break and hates non-locals and beginners, sharing nothing and gifting the others with memorable experiences..
Sure.

What I'm saying is: tell me you don't like it, don't tell me bullshits about god's creation and free surf..

And by the way, the future of competitive surfing is in a pool. Wait and see.

-------

Around Sydney

After a long time I went back to visit Sydney, but this time my focus was on the coast of this iconic city.

I traveled north and south visiting all the famous spots and I loved them all.

I'm not going to write a travel log or surf guide here.
But I want to share some pics with you and the enthusiasm that the locals transmitted to me.

I was there driving and enjoying the scenery from early in the morning to sunset, and those surfers were always running to the water, riding perfect beautiful waves and making me feel happy, believe it or not.

But the best show was to watch this guy

He's in the centre, never mind the SUP guy

frothing to get there, in a completely empty line up, first thing of the day, and watching him catching the waves and realizing he wasn't that good, and that he could have been me.

Or this two teenage lovers and beginners, probably skipping school to spend time together, having an amazing beach all to themselves.

Great memories.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maroubra and its fearsome crew..

It's easy to see the rip from that high

Freshwater Beach. It seemed an easy spot and I like to think I'd surf there..
..and I'd spend a month or two here..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bellissime visioni.

Manly Beach - failed

I'm finally visiting the famous beaches around Sydney and wanted to upload some pics but both the app and the website are not cooperating.
I guess it will happen next week.

Sharks, Sharks and more Sharks

Sharks, sharks and sharks..

For those of you who don’t live around here there has been yet another shark attack in the north coast of NSW. Not fatal, fortunately.

The count is scary now. It’s just bad luck or something in the big picture is changing?
This weekend I’ll be busy and a NE wind will fuck up the small waves, so I guess I’m not going surfing. And somehow I feel like it’s good not to go. :(

Tristezza. :(

On the Mick Fanning/shark accident

Things that come to my mind after this closer encounter.

A part from the initial shock and fear and all, if you listen to MF interview and coldly watch the video, you get the sense that it’s not a shark attack, technically.
The shark got tangled with the leash in its mouth and get agitated while, obviously, Mick get freaked out. They both kick around, both thinking “wtf it’s happening!”.
Probably the worst part of the footage is when MF swim away and then turn around to face the menace. I wonder if his blood froze when waiting and facing an unspeakable horror. Mine does all the time I think of it.

I think the shark was just checking him out. Also, it may have gone for a test bite a minute later if the leash accident wouldn’t have happened.

Theatrically that wave that rises up and cover MF from the view is damned perfect, if it was a movie!

Kelly Slater on FB states that a friend spotted a shark in JB water from the drone camera some time before the accident.
Two questions here: how’s that nobody saw it among the organizers, event staff etc.?
How about using the drones to patrol popular beaches, not only surf spots, like 8 hours a day? It certainly would cost less than an helicopter flight (which are common in Sunshine and Gold Coast, QLD, but obviously not very consistent throughout the day).

Then I think this, but please don’t get it wrong.
The Australian media are riding this story with great joy. And ok, a bit annoying but fine.
But then you hear someone saying: “Wow! This never happened before in a competition! Unbelievable!”
Well no. Stop here.
How is that some random recreational surfers get mutilated or killed by sharks every year and the professionals surf every day everywhere and nothing happen to them?
Is there some kind of magic spell?
Yes I kwon, someone may say: well you dumb ass don’t know about this guy, and that guy etc..    But look at the big picture: were this guys top pro? Known to the world? How long the pros spend time in the water every-single-day?
My average is 6 to 9 hours a month. A month!!
The real question is: how’s that this guys don’t get attacked more often?
Again, don’t take me wrong. I do not wish anything like this to anyone, at all.
But I marvel at this apparently strange fact.
I think about Bob McTavish. He stated that in the ‘60s he was surfing Noosa 150 days a year. (That means that the other 215 days he was surfing elsewhere, not that he didn’t surf). And in those days there was nobody in the water. How the hell nothing ever happened to him? A whole life in the water!
Wayne Lynch? He surfed the prohibitive south coast of Victoria by himself for years! I mean, how dangerous was that? Not only sharks, what about injuries?
Kelly Slater? He just said he never had a closer encounter! What?!

So well, a shark attack during a surf competition? Well, it was weird it didn't happen before.

Alcuni pensieri sparsi a riguardo dell’incidente MF/squalo l’altro giorno in SudAfrica.

E va be, ci sta.
In superfice. Perche’ sotto gli squali ci sono sempre. E nei restanti giorni dell’anno surfava altrove, ovviamente. Da solo o quasi. Con gli squali. Mai successo niente. Prendi Wayne Lynch.
Niente.

VersaTraction review #3

(For the final review, click here)

So this was the third trial with it.

This time I had the cutlets on the rails and some bits on the deck, sideways, to help my ass stay put (as said before, the suit doesn’t have traction on it).

I think I made a mistake to not put the versatraction immediately on the rails!
Most of the uncomfortable feeling his gone. Also my ass didn’t slide much and I think it was a matter of my legs on the rails keeping me steady more than the bits I added on the deck.

Overall I didn’t have problems!
I think that’s it.

I will keep it and I will write again about it if and when there’s something to add.

On a side note, the Versatraction longboard clear package is around 8ft long, which costs around 90$. I could use it without the need for more because my board is 9’1 and I left a few inches clear on the nose and small bit on the tail where I know I won’t put my feet. But you need to buy an extension pack for a longer board. Which sucks.
