The Tikigrip

Talking about sticky stuff.

I just found this website, from US. These guys created grip strips to replace wax on surfboards. It’s called Tikigrip.
It seems I’m not the only one who thinks wax is obsolete and stupid (and polluting).

I like it. I like when people try to move forward.

I personally use the VersaTraction on my board. After one year I can say it works, even if I had to add a tiny tiny bit of wax on the tail to avoid some slippery effects at high inclinations. (maybe if I was able to turn tighter it wouldn’t happen, anyway). But overall I’m happy with it.

Main differences between VersaTraction and Tikigrip:

-VT costs around 90AUD for a longboard, TG 6USD a roll (a roll is 5ft)
-VT is transparent and even if with time it gets dark a bit, it is still mostly not visible. TG has a visual impact on your board (but it can be turned into cool design!)

I’d prefer the transparent solution, but I’d like to try the Tikigrip out!

For VersaTraction review(s), please check here.

New gadget

My never ending exploration of options..

Because sometimes I still make the stupid mistake of turning backhand too far forward, I thought to teach myself where to put my back feet. Hence the picture below.
I know that dull minds will object about having a traction pad on a longboard, but do you think I give a fuck?

I can’t wait to try it out.

OMG! A traction pad on a longboard!

Dreaming of..

I just post a picture here.
It's taken from a webcam, right now.
Many of you will know the place immediately.

Let's say for now that this place is calling me..

Fantastic sunset, fantastic ripples..

Un fotogramma appena preso da una webcam.
In molti potrebbero riconoscere immediatamente il posto.

Ne sento il richiamo.. magari, chissa'..

Health & surf

March has been a bad month and April is working hard to be worst.
When you’r sick, in bed or on the couch, with pain and all, the idea of surfing seems so far that it’s hard to believe to be able to drive 2 hours, run to the water, paddle for hours and catch waves.
Surfing becomes a dream and you are not sure it was true at all. At the same time, surfing keeps you wanting to get back there as soon as possible.

Last Saturday I’ve been back in the water. I had no energy and almost gave up fighting the white water.
Then I caught some waves and my soul felt much, much better.
I hope the ocean will let me have fun this autumn. I need it.

About crowd (and dumb people)

An article from Swellnet to not just complain but think about what to do.

I think the author have some suggestions that can be taken seriously.
Unfortunately, the comments are so dumb, as always.  So, so dumb.
There's one guy that says: 'wave-parks can be a solution', to which the first reply is:
Yeah and Krispy Kreme outlets Provide so much supply that fat people never eat elsewhere.

Surfers. It seems to me that the problems in the water are caused not by the crowd itself, but by the dumbness of the board riders..

_____

Where did March go?

I had high expectations for March since the last few years have been great. But this time it was not the case. The conditions have been worsening all the time, plus sometimes I have been busy, sometimes I was tired.
Now I’m hoping for some good days in April, and just keep my routine going.
Steady and easy. Easier said..

A picture - Una foto #6

After weeks of good and big waves here, in Hawaii or in Portugal, the ocean is taking a rest.

I always say that I don’t care much of big waves, and that the usual 3 or 4ft delivered by the points around here is perfect for my happiness.
On this, I found this pic from the Pacific Longboarder magazine on FB which make me high way more than others.
To be in the water alone, and seeing that little hill of liquid joy coming to you, and you alone, while everybody else didn’t consider giving the ocean a try, it’s a moment I experienced a few times, and it’s pure joy.

I love this pic. This is pure, real surfing to me.

Like every addiction, surfing is making me a worse person.
My egoism is skyrocketing.

Winston's touch

Weeks of good waves and the core of cyclone Winston's waves is still to reach the Australian coast.
I'm not sure if I should be exhited or scared..

Magic moments

Last Saturday afternoon we were surfing at Tea Tree, Noosa.

It was a bit crowded and we didn't do much for a bit, but it was the only spot working.
When the afternoon became evening people started to retreat, until little by little we were only ten, then 5, then 3.
For once the waves were ours. The point all for us.
And then a little magic happened:
there was no wind, the ocean was like mercury, and the almost full moon lightened the sky and the waves to the east, while the last, red/orange/yellow rays of sun gave sight for our rides.
Black, blue and silver on one side, black, gold and red on the other, simultaneously. And silence.

I'm not able to describe it better than this. I whish I could.

It was magic. For a few minutes we were in a parallel universe, where magic was possible, and beauty was all.
At some point, at the end of a ride, I stretched up my legs and my back, lifting my arms and face to the sky, like Rocky Balboa on top of the stairs. Stars and Noosa lights far away.
And even so, the board kept going as smooth as ever. I didn't shout. I was pure joy.

I'll never forget it.

Surfing into 2 postcards at the same time

Ero gioia pura.

Non lo dimentichero' mai.

Surf and Zen

3 weeks of good to very good condition, with a chance to get epic.
Cyclone Winston makes damages on the pacific islands and gives great waves down here.

In my limited experience this is exceptional. According to old surfers account, this is the way it was once upon a time. But it’s rare now. And by Murphy’s law I’m really stuck with stuff to do.
Unfortunately I’m super busy, otherwise I’d be spending my year holidays one hour from here, surfing every day. But life has a greater scope than just waves, and there are millions of commitments to honour, for a million reasons. (that’s the life of the real surfer, as I use to say. A life of struggle and double flips).
I need to limit myself to weekends only, and even then, to carefully plan my next sessions.

Surfing is teaching me the Zen. How to keep calm and soothing my soul.

-----

Numbers -or- it's easy mate!

Recently I was asked about how many hours I spent surfing.
So I made some calculation.

I’ve been surfing once a week for just over 4 years, 6 months of which wasted for an health problem. So I tend to correct this to 3.5 years.
With aproximation, I can say that I’ve been in the water for 250 hours.
Now I just read an article where it is said that average surfers have 1.5 to 3 sessions a week (fuck you guys). And also that a surfer paddles for 60% of the time in the water. And that surfing is only 15% of the active time (of the 60%).
So if I do 15% of 60% of 250hrs.. that’s 22.5hrs of surfing.
Honestly.. this seems a lot to me.

If I compare this to my recent skateboard and goofboard learning, it feels like I may have been practicing for.. maybe ten hours..
And this is why surfing it’s hard. 4 years of my life dedicate to this, for probably 10 hours of joy.

But at the same time, if you think about it, you actually just need few hours to grasp the basics and be able to enjoy it and do your little stuff.
So, that’s easy, right?

But it’s hard!
But it’s actually easy.

Or not?

-----
-----

No, aspetta: e’ difficile.

Ma facile. Pero’ e’ difficile!

Che ne dite voi?

What happened in Noosa

Victor's waves were consistently around the 2m mark with 14sec period.

Most of the coast was too big or too rough for me, and anyway, all we wanted was to surf Noosa.
We went there on Sunday and no surprise, the place was packed.

Little Cove and National park were perfect, just head high, and we didn't even bother checking out Tea Tree were all the best guys were for sure.

Once in the water, the first hour was getting frustrating. Perfect, beautiful waves and so many people around I couldn't even surf the smallest left overs..

Then magic happened.
After adjusting my position for 50 minutes, I got one, big, perfect wave. The other, because there were others on the same wave, on my inside, were caught in the white water in just few seconds. And the wave was all mine! Fast, high, but gentle, beautiful water, pushing me to the shore, and all the others paddling to give me way. And me? Well, I was working on it.
Go up the face, make a mix of cutback and re-entry, go down, turn up again, cut back a bit, step forward, step back, cut back..
..all the way from National Park to the inside of Little Cove!!
My legs hurt!
Joy is to say the least.

I managed to repeat it 3 other times, and surfed smaller ones inside Little Cove.

I didn’t surf much, overall, but I put together four of my longest and better surfed rides in one single day.

Pure Stoke.

I created this from the webcam. In the cirles the aproximate starting and arrving points of my rides

Quaranta secondi circa. Avevo le gambe che chiedevano pieta’. Dal National Park a Little Cove solo andata. Mai successo prima.

Gioia e’ dire poco.

Victor are you coming?

Waiting for the cyclon Victor to deliver a decent swell.
Austalia east cost is in stand by.
The swell is kind of late and tomorrow -Saturday- it’s a windy day. Means Saturday is practically wasted.
Sunday is gonna be packed to the rafter.
I’m excited. I dream of perfect Noosa waves. But there’s nothing to guarantee me a decent session.
Anxiety.

Mezza Australia e’ in stand by.
Attesa.

Italian Record

Waiting for some good swell...

It's recent news that the italian surfer Alessandro Marciano ha surfed the biggest wave ever (so far) in Nazare, Portugal.

With all respect for Alessandro, I believe this is becoming kind of pointles.
It tells nothing about the surfer (a part from having big balls), nothing about his style, his abilities, his history.
I don't understand this business of being pushed, forced, into a wave so big that you can't actually surf it.

This is Alessandro. He's on the shoulder, away from the lip and going straight. The wave is spilling.
If you watch the video, and the video of everyone on that wave for the matter, all they do is going straight on one side and getting out of there.
I don't know.. not a single manouvre.. they get shot in and they rush out. A sort of Corrida (bull fight), when you let the bull pass beside you with a trick. Yes, big balls, but what are you actually doing?
It's a world record. Fine. Tomorrow there will be another one. Don't worry.
I believe surfing is something else.

A video

Sardinia

I was born in Sardinia, one of the biggest islands on the Mediterranean Sea.
In relation to the sea, I was taught two main things: 1-to have fear; 2- the fact that nowhere in the world I’d find a better, more beautiful place.

Then, many years later, I came to Australia.

Surfing is teaching me about the sea. Where before there was just fear, now I can watch and see what’s happening. I always have fear and I’m astounded when I see dads with kids in 2m waves, but I know the rules, I know my limits, I can assess and judge for myself. I rarely push myself out of the comfort zone, and the comfort zone evolves with me.

Then I also got to know the places of the SE Queensland and I fell in love with them.
I don’t believe anymore that the beauty of Sardinia beaches and sea is unmatchable.
When the water is 100% clear, well.. you can’t go past it. There are different places, and they are beautiful in different ways.

I’m not surfing Coolanagatta as much as I used to due to the crowd factor. But I deeply love this place.
This video it’s just a series of drone shots, not great in itself, but.. wow..

-----

I posti invece.

Starting 2016

Happy new year every one!

Just as 2016 kicked in, a good swell reached the SE Queensland. The pictures above are taken from Kirra Hill, Coolangatta, looking at Kirra Point and Snapper/Greenmount Point.

During the short Christmas break I managed to have 5 sessions in 10 days, which is an extremely good average. Unfortunately the conditions before that swell were doable but not great. My friend and I were waiting to go to Noosa but at the end it didn’t happen.

The day I took the pics the average waves were head high with some sets easily around 2m.
From that hill I witnessed some 2m tubes rolling in, mostly unridden.
Actually the reason why I was up there was to check if there was any hope to get out there myself.
With a longboard and no duck dive, it could turn easily in a nightmare.
So basically I wasted 1 hour assessing what to do! In the end, even if usually Currumbin can get bigger sets than Superbank, we spotted a rip almost in front of the river mouth which helped us to get out safely.

The point was busy and enormous so we settled for some rides afar from there. Basically a gigantic beach break (but with up to 10sec rides before the break). I managed to catch a few and do something. But not much.
The sea was big but the tide was also coming in, so that catching waves in safety became harder and harder..

Overall it was a strange day..

Buon anno!

There’s a lot of interest around the Kelly Slater’s artificial wave.
The social media seem to love it.

Obviously it looks great, and I hope someone will be able to open a wave-park in SE Queensland asap.

But having said that I don’t understand why (according to the general reaction) KS’s wave is great and Snowdonia is not.

First, from the (very few) images I can say that they both run straight on a long and straight pool.
Second they both have a pier, or wall, something in the middle, under which a machine runs generating the wave.
Third, they both have horrible water. (why?)

If you are mean, you could suspect that KS’s company copied the concept from the Snowdonia park.

Then there are two differences. The first is that only KS’s wave creates tubes. The second is that KS’s wave doesn’t have an intermediate surfing option, or beginner option for the matter.

If we just calmly reason on what we see from the video we can conclude that this new wave is certainly more sophisticated, but it’s not a new concept and it doesn’t offer the option to have more surfers on the same wave at the same time.

A part from the tube it's only white wash. Note the high banks and the 2 wave rebounces: waiting time?
So, keep calm and relax. If Snowdonia is bad, this is doing nothing for the average surfers. And guess what? It’s us, the average surfers, that are suppose to pay for it.

In truth Snowdonia is a good thing and KS 's attempt is still behind in providing a good compromise. It's just a demo. Maybe they want to attract investors.

Terzo, l’acqua fa schifo uguale! (mistero..)

Niente livello intermedio, solo schiuma.

VersaTraction review #4

(For the final review, click here)

I have to add something to the VersaTraction review.

As mentioned below I managed to surf some bigger than usual (for me) waves.
A few times I made turns to the left, from top to bottom, with good speed. Sometimes I managed to keep it tight, sometimes wide with big arcs.
Two times I wiped out kind of hard, not knowing why. Fortunately I didn’t hurt myself.

Thankfully I had the gopro with me. Watching the files, without even looking for clues, I stumbled upon two clips when I’m turning left and suddenly I splash in the water like a stone.

Well. Unfortunately (because I like the VersaTraction – but fortunately for me) those wipe outs were caused by the water flowing over/around the back foot, pushing it and causing it to loose grip.

First wipe out
A moment before the second wipe out

The moment after..

Versatraction fail!

Now, this is the first certified fail I found in 8 months. But also the first time I could surf biggish waves and reach some speed.
I’m sad.

What do I do now? I love being wax free. I love my shiny board..
Yes, I’m not surfing again those waves anytime soon (according to my personal patterns). But still..

At the moment I have two course of action:
-Going back to wax (super sad)
-Adding just some wax upon the Versatraction, on the tail area, just to enhance the grip (compromise.. bad compromise?)

I’ll probably go for the second option.

Ci penso. Probabile che vada per la seconda opzione.
