Al momento mi limito a questa foto.

Surf Trip

I waited for a long time before writing this, but finally here we are: in few days I'm off for my first surf trip overseas.

My mate and I are going to north PNG.

It's a few hours flight from Brisbane.

It gets swells during this time of the year.

It doesn't get gigantic tubing waves like Hawaii or Fiji.

They only get 20 surfers a day (in the whole area, not on one spot). You can't just turn up there and go surfing if you didn't book and pay your place to the local surfing association. Sustainable surfing.

It seems we'll get perfect size waves for our longboarding pleasure. 

I'm very, very, very exited.

My board looks like a sausage and we are getting ready.

Can't wait! 

Ho aspettato a lungo prima di scriverlo, ma finalmente ci siamo: sto per partire per il mio primo surf trip oltremare.

Io ed un amico andiamo nel nord PNG.

Sono solo poche ore di volo da Brisbane.

Riceve onde in questo periodo dell'anno.

Non riceve mostri impossibili in stile Hawaii o Fiji.

Accettano solo 20 surfisti al giorno, in tutta l'area. Non e' possibile arrivare e farsi una surfata se non hai prenotato e pagato l'ingresso all'associazione serfistica locale. Surf sostenibile, al contrario di molte isole del Pacifico dove si crea il circo.

Sembra che al nostro arrivo ci aspettino onde di grandezza perfetta per il nostro godimento da longboard.

Incrocio le dita e sogno ad occhi aperto. Non sto nella pelle.

La mia tavola sembra una salsiccia ed e' quasi tutto pronto.

In case you missed it, a Japanese guy was recovered 6km out at sea by a tank, after he went adrift during a surf session in Wollongong, Australia.

Nel caso non l'abbiate sentito, un tipo giapponese e' stato recuperato da una petroliera a 6km dalla costa, dopo esser andato alla deriva durante una sessione di surf a Wollongong, Australia.

A pensarci, sorgono troppe domande. 

Forse e' il Fantozzi giapponese, semplicemente.

Reality check

Take any surf magazine or video, and you'll see those mythic creatures surfing amazing and uncrowded waves. 

Than take Bethany Hamilton's interview here, and read this:

"So being in Fiji it was like a motivation just to be able to keep surfing heats out there with no-one around, because even the free-surfs are crowded. Everyone’s there trying to get a wave"

There you go. After or before World Tour events/heats, there are so many surfers in the water for the "free surf" sessions, that it gets crowded like a usual session for us.

I think I've never seen a pic of  top surfers crowding a spot. But I suspect it is the reality of the World Tour. Unwelcome, unwanted reality.

A sfogliare riviste e vedere filmati sui top surfers, sembra che stiamo sempre da soli a surfare onde  della madonna.

Poi trovi questa intervista di Bethany Hamilton, e leggi questo:

"Essere alle Fiji era come una motivazione ad avanzare nelle heats di gara senza nessuno attorno, perche' anche le free-surf session erano affollate. Tutti cercano di prendere onde."

e ti rendi conto che in realta', durante le sessioni libere, i pro affollano gli spot allo stesso modo di noi umani, rendendo le sessioni frustranti.

Non credo di aver mai visto una foto di spot affollati a causa dei top surfers. Non fa parte dell'immagine del surf che si vuole vendere. Ma e' sicuramente la realta': folla in acqua.
