Waiting for this toy

By now I would have imagined having visited Urbnsurf in Melbourne for a second, if not a third time.

But the pandemic keeps everything in the air and planning this trip - holiday, airplane, hotel, sessions - is most likely to tun into a bad idea.

And I keep daydreaming.

Only now I'm also dreaming* of surfing at Surf Lake, in north Queensland. Before Christmas they said they were going to ask the local council permission to turn the facility from test/demo project into open to public attraction. They must have had so many requests that are finally conceding!

They say it could be done by the end of 2021.

As always, let's wait.

*if you don't know me than let me explain that for a low level surfer, a surf pool represents certainty of quality and certainty of surfing without the "surviving of the fittest" rule of line-ups. So, yes, a wavepoool, which I tried, is a "perfect wave" dream come true, dozens of times, hassle free. 

A quest'ora immaginavo avrei fatto sicuramente una seconda, se non pure una terza capatina all' Urbnsurf di Melbourne.

Ed invece. Seppure l'Australia va avanti con un numero bassissimo di contagi, le restrizioni cambiano di frequente a seconde dei casi, delle zone, delle circostanze.

Significa che prendere ferie, prenotare un aereo, un hotel e le sessioni in piscina, sono tutte attivita' che possono rivelarsi un disastro, per lo meno economico. Rimango dunque a sognare.

Ed ultimamente, da Natale circa, sogno* di andare invece a nord, alla Surf Lake di Yeppoon, vicino Rockhampton. 

Dopo due anni di raffinamento, prove, e promozione per investitori, gli ideatori del progetto devono aver ricevuto talmente tante richieste che si sono finalmente convinti: han detto che avrebbero chiesto i permessi necessari al comune per trasformare la piscina dimostrativa in una struttura per il publico. Forse per la fine dell'anno.

Come sempre, aspettiamo.

*si certo, sarebbe piu' bello visitare un paese nuovo per un vero surf trip, ma qua il punto cruciale e' che la wavepool, che ho provato, ti da l'ocasione di surfare la migliore onda disponibile senza la rottura di palle dei line-up, dove vince il piu' forte (bravo) a discapito di tutti gli altri. Quindi si, sogno di prendere le onde del video a dozzine, perche' bastera' prenotarle.

Too big, too small, too big again.

There’s no in between these days!

Last weekend I gave up, expecting 3ft and finding waves double overhead. The weekend before I ended up surfing barely 1ft with the performer longboard, since the other one was under repair. The one before I had to go to Noosa to find the right (smaller) size for me.

My craving for improvement is forever left unsatisfied, forever postponing the day I can surf enough to make a step forward.

Looking those big waves from the beach was also good, even though I didn’t see anyone ripping those monsters. It made me feel better as we are used to see impressive things on the internet, but then normal surfers are not that far from me, actually.

 On a side note, surfing the Brett White -performer- 9.1 longboard on super small waves made me realise how much that board is wasted in my hands. This board helped me progress, and it’s super on steep walls. But I mostly surf small waves, and the Sea Plane 9.1 by Beau Young is giving me the right balance for my usual sessions: loose enough to have fun, but steady and heavy enough to learn to nose ride.

Now I’m even thinking of buying a 100% nose rider board. I’m tempted. I feel it can be the right time.

Non ci sono mezze misure. O gigante o minuscolo.

Sono andato convinto di trovare 3 piedi e mi sono trovato davanti 3 metri serissimi.

La volta precedente era piccolissimo e la volta prima sono dovuto andare a Noosa per evitare mostri.

Ho in testa delle cose da provare e l'idea di poter migliorare, ma rimando all'infinito all'occasione giusta.

Ho finito per stare a guardare le onde e i giovani scavezzacollo che si sono cimentati. Alla fine, in un giorno non publicizzato (forse inaspettato un po' per tutti) di onde grandi, le persone in acqua non facevano nessun numero particolare. Segno che forse non sono cosi' lontano dalla media del surfista comune.

Tornando alla giornata di onde minuscole, sono entrato con la performer perche' l'altra era a riparare per via di un'onda assassina a Noosa. Ovviamente stavo usando la tavola sbagliata, ma la cosa interessante e' che ne ho percepito l'inadeguatezza, allo stesso in modo in cui a suo tempo mi sono convinto di doverne provare un'altra. La Brett White 9.1 e' fantastica su pareti alte e ripide, ed a suo tempo mi ha aperto un mondo di possibilita'. Pero' alla fine io surfo, o cerco di surfare onde medio piccole, e la Sea Plane 9.1 di Beau Young si e' rivelata piu' adatta a me. Abbastanza sciolta sulla coda per divertirsi, ma stabile e pesantuccia per farti camminare e stare sul naso.   

Ora addirittura sto pensando a prendere un log totale, cioe' un noserider senza compromessi. A vedere gli altri che fanno noseriding mi accorgo che la tavola li aiuta in certi frangenti. Mumble mumble.. 

Cyclone Lucas

It has been a powerful swell. Someone has died swimming in the Gold Coast.

Like many, I went to seek shelter at Noosa, where calm conditions didn't prevent the ocean from delivering fast, steep, sometime heavy waves.

I got my camera with me this time and among the many useless pics, one stood out for its vibe and the wall of water taking most of the horizon.

I was satisfied with my surfing, but unhappy for the very few waves I got.

Then I spoke to an expert bloke who told me that the same day down the coast he got 3 or 4 waves in three hours. That helped me putting things into perspective.

Be patient. Be serene. That's what I have to remind myself every time. I don't know if this is a lesson. I'm not sure about what the ocean is teaching me about. I suspect it just takes me for a ride (!), most of the time.

Cyclone Lucas - Gold Coast

La mareggiata e' stata potente. Pericolosa. Tre bagnanti sono affogati in Gold Coast nel giro di due giorni.

Io, come tanti, sono andato al riparo di Noosa dove la situazione era tranquilla ma le onde comunque veloci, ripide e pesanti.

Avevo pure la macchina fotografica. E tra i tanti tentativi deludenti, ne ho fatto una molto carina che trasmette una certa atmosfera. Mi piace anche perche' si vede bene il muro d'acqua, piu' alto della persona a destra, che avanza e riempe l'orizzonte.

Posso essere contento del mio surfare, ma ero inizialmente deluso delle pochissime onde prese, data la folla. Pero' poi ho parlato con uno esperto, che ha surfato mostri d'acqua in Gold Coast, e diceva con serenita' che ne aveva preso tre o quattro in 3 ore. Questo mi ha dato la giusta prospettiva e mi ha rasserenato. 

Il segreto a quanto pare e' la pazienza. Ma il tempo vola ed io devo ancora imparare delle cose prima di essere soddisfatto, e prima di essere acciaccato.

Dicono che il mare insegni umilta' e non so che altro. Io non sono ancora sicuro mi insegni qualcosa. Forse mi prende in giro. 

Era bello. Era frustrante. Era elettrizante ed era demoralizzante.

Si e' fatto attendere, ma ora l'oceano pompa alla grande grazie al ciclone tropicale Lucas seduto davanti alla costa!
