Waiting for 2021

Near the end of 2020.

A stupid year that gave more waves than usual and during which I surfed way less than ever.

Since I started the year at the wavepool, the destiny had to find a way to slow me down, not wanting to risk me doing real progress. So, in this me-centric vision, the pandemic was made to stop me.

Yes, things were bad all over the world. Still are. So, let's just leave this year behind with the childish idea that from tomorrow morning everything will be alright.

 E volge dunque al termine questo anno disgraziato.

Un anno che mi ha pure preso per il culo dato che ha sfornato mesi di onde, si, ma in piena pandemia.

Avendo iniziato con una indigestione di surf alla wavepool, il destino ha pensato bene di fermarmi e trasformare il 2020 nell'anno in cui ho surfato di meno in assoluto. 

I progressi. I fantomatici progressi che credo di riuscire a fare continuano ad essere spalmati su tempi biblici, o ere geologiche. Avessi altri 40 anni di tentativi come Mose' in un deserto acquoso, forse riuscirei ad arrivare alla terra promessa di belle manovre e nose-riding stilosi.

Invece il surf prima mi esalta e poi mi deride, ricordandomi, specie in questo annus horribilis, quanto poco tempo si ha a disposizione. 

Venga dunque il 2021. Nella ingenua speranza che da domani mattina sia tutto meglio.

 

The left!

 Got it!

 I went in the area with the idea of surfing on the north side and find a nice size and no wind. But the forecast was wrong, and the conditions were poor, wind affected. So, I just drove around with no expectations and finally saw the left point working!

I rushed to the water in fear of the coming tide and started to take the measures of the place. We were just a bunch of people there, while all the others were surfing the more famous beach break and the river mouth (which I can't stand it for it's stupid currents and disappointing rides).

I'm so used to go right back-hand that surfing left it's weird and it doesn't come as immediate as you would imagine.

Anyway, the place it's an actual Queensland point break. Nice, clean rolling wave, just small in comparison to the famous places. Ideal for fun longboarding.

Unfortunately, the bottom seems to be sort of deep water and while seemingly good waves crash on the rocks, it doesn’t take much for the tide to bury all the rest in too much water. The wait grew longer and longer, and I left the place in just over an hour.

 I guess overall it's a fun alternative for the locals, but not worth commuting for.

I'm happy I was finally able to try it and to snatch few rides out of a stupid wind-affected day.

Trovata!

Sono andato in zona a surfare sull'altro lato aspettandomi onde un po' grandi e qualcher ora di tregua dal vento.

Invece il vento era gia' forte e le onde pessime. Sono andato allora a dare uno sguardo alla sinistra, giusto per, e con mia grande sorpresa era li a srotolarsi vicino alle rocce.

Ho tentato di fare in fretta perche' sapevo che con le forti maree di questo periodo sarebbe bastato poco tempo perche' scomparisse sotto un metro d'acqua di troppo.

In acqua eravamo 7 (tutti gli altri a surfare la ben piu' nota spiaggia e foce del fiume, in balia del vento e della corrente bizzarra del fiume. Non sopporto quel posto.), poi una quindicina, poi nuovamente una manciata.

Ho fatto in tempo a prenderne alcune decenti, provando l'insolita -per me- esperienza di fare il pop-up e surfare sul lato 'dritto' per poi tornare indietro di spalle. Devo dire che l'onda ha qualita', si srotola abbastanza bene e presenta qualche sezione da interpretare dovuta ovviamente al fondale, roccioso. Un vero e proprio point break come gli altri piu' famosi, solo su piccola, piccola scala. Ed ovviamente prono a scomparire in fretta.

E cosi' e' stato. Le attese si sono subito allungate e dopo poco piu' di un'ora ho lasciato perdere, dovendo pure giocarmi le ultime onde visibili con gli altri avventori del luogo.

Il giorno che l'ho vista per la prima volta doveva essere al suo meglio. Mi rendo conto che e' una alternativa divertente e sfiziosa per i locals, ma non vale un viaggio apposito, purtroppo. Se non in tempo di lunga astinenza.  

In ogni caso soddisfatto dell'esperienza e di aver strappato una surfatina al vento avverso.

Not 6m!

The big swell we just had was more like just a big storm than anything else.

Coastal erosion, big waves but messy conditions, cold, windy like crazy.

We managed to get our sessions just before it all started and probably because everyone was waiting for big waves, we found ourselves surrounded by beginners.

It has been a weird session. Cold, dark, rainy, with either waves drowned in high tide or big and fun.

I was able to surf decently, and I feel I'm not too far from improving my riding another little step.

I'm stoked by it and I can't wait for the next session.

When normal guys find big waves... same place but not related to last weekend 

La mareggiata si e' rivelata essere piu' che altro una tempesta.

Nubifragio, vento fortissimo, freddo (incredibile) marea reale (king tide), erosione delle spiaggie e onde grandi ma incasinate per via del fatto che son state generate troppo vicino.

Siamo comunque riusciti a fare una sessione normale sabato mattina, prima che si scatenasse il finimondo. Tutta le gente brava ed i buffoni stavano evidentemente aspettando le mega onde e noi ci siamo ritrovati circondati da principianti.

Una sessione strana, buia, con pioggia, fredda a tratti, con onde ancora mezzo sepolte dall'alta marea, dure da prendere, e alcuni set grandi e potenti. Non una giornata memorabile ma comunque interessante per via di alcuni movimenti che son riuscito a fare.

Per via delle condizioni sto surfando a singhiozzo, eppure mi sento vicino al fare un piccolo ma importante salto di qualita'. 

Sono gasato all'idea e come sempre impaziente di riprovarci.

Six meters?

A part from a few days of semi-torrential rain la Nina didn't really do anything. 

Until now. 

According to experts this incondiserate swell surge it's because of her. And we should expect more. 

6m at 13second between sunday and monday.

I've learned that those numbers are never real. But even if it was 3m it would be an interesting show. Let's see how this goes!

A parte qualche giorno di pioggia semi torrenziale della Nina si erano gia' perse le traccie. Caldo assurdo, venti polverosi, niente poggie e niente surf.Sino ad ora.

Ad ascoltare gli esperti questa mareggiata furiosa e' dovuta alla Nina che entra nel vivo della stagione estiva. E dobbiamo aspettarci altri eventi simili.

6 metri a 13 secondi di intervallo, tra domenica e lunedi. Sei metri sono una cosa ssurda, ma ho imparato che sono evidentemente calcoli sui dati delle boe al largo della costa e che niente del genere arriva mai, o quasi mai, sulla costa. 

In ogni caso se ne arrivano solo 3 di metri sara' comunque una grande giostra!

Vedremo a breve se e cosa arrivera' veramente su queste spiaggie e se Noosa potra' essere il mio (e di 2000 altri) solito porto sicuro.
