See ya

I know I really have no time in the coming days, so I’m saying goodbye to 2016 now.

It has been a year of surfing progress and frustration.

I got better. I had great long rides, some nice attempts at nose riding, some interesting manoeuvres, big waves, fun waves, steep drops, good things in general. 

I think you can merge me with the rest of my fellow Australian, recreational seaborn surfers. And it’s an achievement.

(Now I’d like to learn to send my longboard vertical against the wave. That’s my aim.)

But I also had a bit of bad luck, lots of (dry) commitments, and lots of horrible conditions that slowed me down.  

2017 is coming with some good changes and some news.

I’m looking forward to it.

I hope it’ll bring (surf)progress and serenity. For me and you all.

We all need it.

Prevedo pochissimo tempo a disposizone, quindi congedo ora il 2016 di questo blog e rimando and un 2017 che spero porti buone onde.

Il 2016 e’ stato contemporaneament un anno buono per il mio surf e deludente per le condizioni ambientali ed alcune casistiche sfigate che mi hanno fatto perdere belle occasioni. In particolare gli ultimi sei mesi sono stati i piu’ frustranti che abbia mai visto, in quanto ad assenza di onde.

Io sono migliorato. Ho fatto onde chilometriche, ho fatto accenni di nose riding, ho surfato in entrambe le direzioni, ho lanciato spruzzi d’acqua oltre la cresta, ho sfidato alcune onde decisamente piu’alte di me, ho eseguito dei pop up su muretti verticali col mio magico longboard. 

Ho avuto anche esilaranti momenti fantozziani ed ho danneggiato la mia bella tavola da fermo, sotto la doccia. 

Credo che ora, visto da fuori, potrei mimetizzarmi nella massa dei tanti surfisti che affollano queste parti.

Vorrei solo migliorare un altro po’ per mandare il longboard verticale sulla faccia dell’onda.

La delusione e’ stata la poca costanza. Surfo tutto l’anno, ma impegni, sfighe e condizioni avverse mi hanno messo il bastone tra le ruote.

 Il 2017 sta per iniziare con delle belle novita’. 

Spero sia un anno di ulteriori progressi, e serenita’. Anche per voi.

Ne abbiamo bisogno tutti.

Esher's waves

Checking out a book about Mauritz Esher, I found this great drawing.

He was Dutch and went to school at Zandvoort, near the North Sea. 

I went there once. There was a nice coffee shop at the beach, with pictures on the wall of an historic storm which destroyed the coastline decades before. And there was an Australian surf shop!

It was September, the water was freaking cold and brown. It was low tide and you could guess the shallow water for hundreds of meters.

I can see just that place in here. And his depiction of waves is perfect, ca va sans dir! 

Sfogliando un libro su Mauritz Esher ho trovato questo bellissimo disegno di onde.

Andava a scuola a Zandvoort, sul mare del nord, Olanda. Ci sono stato qualche anno fa. In un baretto c'erano foto di una storica mareggiata che aveva distrutto il litorale. E c'era un negozio di surf australiano!

Era settembre e l'acqua era marroncina, con la bassa marea si intuiva un fondale basso per tanti metri, esattamente come nel suo disegno.

Ed ovviamente con la sua maestria ha disegnato non onde perfette, ma perfettamente realistiche.

That reminded me of a nice post I wrote for my old -Italian only- blog. I had a look and decided to translate it into English because it's really nice!

It has nothing to do with surfing, but in a way it does, since knowing where you are it's important, isn't it?

Vado fuori tema, ma ho appena imparato con sconcerto che c'e' gente che crede che la terra sia piatta. Un complotto, per capirci!

Mi e' allora tornato alla mente un post molto carino, almeno per i miei gusti, che avevo scritto anni fa per il mio precendente blog sull' Australia. L'ho tradotto e ora lo linko qua sotto.

Non c'entra niente col surf, ma in qualche modo c'entra lo stesso, dato che il posto nel quale ti trovi determina la tua vita (l'Australia per esempio mi ha dato il surf). E bisogna sapere quale posto si occupa nel mondo, no?
