On Kelly Slater's tube wave

There’s a lot of interest around the Kelly Slater’s artificial wave.
The social media seem to love it.

Obviously it looks great, and I hope someone will be able to open a wave-park in SE Queensland asap.

But having said that I don’t understand why (according to the general reaction) KS’s wave is great and Snowdonia is not.

First, from the (very few) images I can say that they both run straight on a long and straight pool.
Second they both have a pier, or wall, something in the middle, under which a machine runs generating the wave.
Third, they both have horrible water. (why?)

If you are mean, you could suspect that KS’s company copied the concept from the Snowdonia park.

Then there are two differences. The first is that only KS’s wave creates tubes. The second is that KS’s wave doesn’t have an intermediate surfing option, or beginner option for the matter.

If we just calmly reason on what we see from the video we can conclude that this new wave is certainly more sophisticated, but it’s not a new concept and it doesn’t offer the option to have more surfers on the same wave at the same time.

So, keep calm and relax. If Snowdonia is bad, this is doing nothing for the average surfers. And guess what? It’s us, the average surfers, that are suppose to pay for it.

In truth Snowdonia is a good thing and KS 's attempt is still behind in providing a good compromise. It's just a demo. Maybe they want to attract investors.

Sui social sono tutti eccitati come ricci per via del video di Kelly Slater che presenta la sua onda artificiale.
Tutti ammaliati dai tubi, dicendo che e’ una figata spaziale.

Premesso che sono a favore delle onde artificiali e non vedo l’ora che un qualsiasi parco d’onde sia fatto da queste parti, mi sambra che si sia persa la bussola.

Dando un’occhiata al video si notano alcune cose..
Primo, l’onda si srotola esattamente come quella creata dallo Snowdonia. Va dritta, in una vasca dritta e lunga.
Secondo, c’e’ un coso al centro, come lo Snowdonia, al di sotto del quale corre il macchinario che genera l’onda.
Terzo, l’acqua fa schifo uguale! (mistero..)
Ad essere cattivi si potrebbe dire che hanno semplicemente copiato tutto.

Ma c’e’ anche un altro punto che invece si differenzia: l’onda di KS oltre al tubo non ha altri punti surfabili. Solo schiuma.
Offre quindi un’onda della Madonna per la quale occorre essere abbastanza bravi, e niente altro.

Niente livello intermedio, solo schiuma. Notare l'onda che rimbalza due volte sulla sponda. Tempi di attesa per un'altra onda?

La cosa buffa e’ che mentre lo Snowdonia, che e’ fatto ed aperto al pubblico, e che ospita almeno 4 surfisti per volta, piu’ i beginners a fine vasca, e’ a detta di molti una cagata, l’onda di KS, in localita’ segreta, in modalita’ demo, e solo per esperti, e’ stata accolta come fosse l’invenzione del secolo.
Mah..

La verita' e' che lo Snowdonia e' una cosa buona, e che questa (di KS) e' in fase sperimentale, e probabilmente il video e' solo una iniziativa per attrarre investitori e continuare lo sviluppo.

I have to add something to the VersaTraction review.

As mentioned below I managed to surf some bigger than usual (for me) waves.
A few times I made turns to the left, from top to bottom, with good speed. Sometimes I managed to keep it tight, sometimes wide with big arcs.
Two times I wiped out kind of hard, not knowing why. Fortunately I didn’t hurt myself.

Thankfully I had the gopro with me. Watching the files, without even looking for clues, I stumbled upon two clips when I’m turning left and suddenly I splash in the water like a stone.

Well. Unfortunately (because I like the VersaTraction – but fortunately for me) those wipe outs were caused by the water flowing over/around the back foot, pushing it and causing it to loose grip.

Versatraction fail!

Now, this is the first certified fail I found in 8 months. But also the first time I could surf biggish waves and reach some speed.
I’m sad.

What do I do now? I love being wax free. I love my shiny board..
Yes, I’m not surfing again those waves anytime soon (according to my personal patterns). But still..

At the moment I have two course of action:
-Going back to wax (super sad)
-Adding just some wax upon the Versatraction, on the tail area, just to enhance the grip (compromise.. bad compromise?)

I’ll probably go for the second option.

Mi trovo costretto ad aggiungere qualcosa in merito al Versatraction che uso sul mio longboard.

Come scritto piu’ sotto, ho avuto modo di serfare belle onde di una buona taglia.
Come capita spesso a Currumbin, nonostante sia un point destro, si puo’ spesso girare a sinistra. Cosi’ ho fatto quando ho potuto, spesso disegnando curve dalla cima al fondo dell’onda, con molta velocita’. Alcune volte son riuscito a girare stretto, carvando, altre non proprio.
Un paio di volte sono caduto malamente in acqua senza pero’ farmi niente (per fortuna) e senza sapere il perche’.

Quando poi a casa ho iniziato a guardare I filmati della gopro, senza cercare niente in particolare, ho scoperto il perche’ di quelle cadute.

Versatraction Fail!

Dai filmati e’ chiaro che il piede dietro perde aderenza a viene portato via dalla forza dell’acqua.
Tristezza!

Mi piace molto questa soluzione. Vivere senza cera e’ una figata e la tavola e’ bellissima.
In 8 mesi non ho avuto problem rilevanti, eppure ora questo lo diventa immediatamente. Mi trovo costretto a riconsiderare le cose. E’ vero che onde cosi’ non mi ricapiteranno a breve, ma bisogna essere sempre in ordine.

Ho due soluzioni immediate:
-Rimettere la cera e abbandonare il Versatraction (pena)
-Metterne giusto un filo sulla coda, sopra il Versatraction (compromesso)

Ci penso. Probabile che vada per la seconda opzione.

From small to big - what a weekend!

I’ve been very busy and I kept surfing pretty much every weekend, but I didn’t have particular things to say.

But this last 5 days the Queensland coast have been blessed with the waves sent by a cyclone somewhere near Fiji (I think.. who cares..). Beautiful waves!

We knew Noosa was going to be crowded but other spots could have been too big for us, so we went there hoping to find only beginners.
We went straight to Tea Tree but it was the busiest I ever saw it. And no kooks. Just good surfers every inch.
I surfed a lot of leftovers just in front of the beach. It was still fun but not what we were looking for.
So we moved to National Park and there the magic happened! All beginners in what appeared to be a flat ocean. But no. Every 10 minutes a sets of 3/4ft high waves rolled in and for once we were the good surfers! We got a lot of fun stuff and we stayed some more hours there!
When Noosa has good waves, no matter the size, nobody can beat them!
Such fun!

Then we took a day off yesterday and went to Currumbin (the swell was getting smaller).
Guys!
We surfed away from the point with few other people.
Sets of head/overhead high waves were rolling in all the times!
I never got so many big (for me) waves! We got them in numbers, surfed them, had a hell of a time!
So stoked! Great, great day!

Then, once in bed, thinking about it, I realized I didn’t exploit them as one could.
I should have gone all the way down and then carve a powerful bottom turn, up on the face, and things like that.
But lacking experience on those condition I was too stoke to stop and think about it.
But that’s ok. I forgive myself.:)
We had such a good time.

Che weekend!
E’ arrivata una swell un po’ fuori stagione che ha regalato onde della Madonna!

Sabato siamo andati a Noosa per due motivi: per evitare onde troppo grosse, e perche’ niente batte la qualita’ di Noosa.
Inizialmente a Tea Tree c’era una folla mai vista. E tutti bravi. Le onde erano fantastiche ma la folla pure. Non siamo riusciti a fare granche sinche non mi sono messo a prendere onde quasi davanti alla spiaggia. Cavalcate cortissime su tristi scarti. Eppure divertenti.
Dopo quasi due ore abbiamo abbandonato e deciso di andare a vedere che succedeva al Natonal Park, e magia, il posto era popolato da beginners e neanche troppi. E dove apparentemente sembrava un piattone, in realta’ ogni dieci minuti arrivavano set sui 3/4ft che I principianti sprecavano o lasciavano al destino.
La’ e’ iniziata la goduria. Abbiamo preso belle onde in quantita’ e quando sembrava tutto finito, e stavamo per uscire da Little Cove, ci siamo ritrovati a surfare pure delle minuscule onde, ma ancora perfette, dentro la piccola baia.
Insomma, ore ed ore in acqua. Distrutti e felici.

Dopodiche’ avevamo gia programmato il lunedi libero per sfruttare al meglio queste onde inaspettate e battere la folla del weekend. Siamo quindi andati a Currumbin dato che sembrava che la mareggiata stesse finendo.
Invece ci siamo ritrovati a cavalcare onde sui due metri in quantita’!
Ragazzi non potete capire!
Acqua cristallina, muri d’acqua alti e ampi, sole splendente, dieci persone sparse qua e la a mai problemi di precedenza! (eravamo lontani dal point)
Che goduria!
Non mi era mai capitato di poter prendere onde cosi’ grandi in questo numero.
Era semplicemente esilarante. Ho fatto alcuni pop up in cima a mostri d’acqua, discese vertiginose, tentativi di curve a tutta velocita’, e alcune cadute spettacolari! :)

Certamente se fossi stato piu’ bravo avrei potuto fare molto di piu’. Ma ero, eravamo in trans.
